Awal Muharram (also called Maal Hijrah) is the beginning of the Islamic new year, coincides with the migration of Prophet Mohammed from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD. Muharram generally means forbidden, is one of the sacred months in Islamic calendar, commemorated as the time for self-evaluation and a fresh start to be a better individual.
On the 10th day of Muharram, also called Ashura, become one of the most important days in Muharram for Muslims. It is the day to commemorate the day when Moses was saved from the Egyptians by God by crossing the Red Sea. Muslims fast for two days to celebrate Ashura, though it is not necessary to fast in Ashura. Moreover, many Muslims will gather with their family and friends.
