Hurray, Hari Raya is finally here! We all just can’t wait for this day to come as we will get invited to our Muslim friend’s open house. This invitation is extended in the spirit of love, harmony, and community.

Imagine those mouth-watering feasts of Rendang, Lemang, Ketupat, Kuih Raya and much more! Apart from all the traditional delicacies that we get to taste, did you about the true meaning of this festival?

The term “Hari Raya” literally means “Day of Celebration”. The main greeting used by Muslims in Malaysia is “Selamat Hari Raya” which means “Happy Eid”. Another greeting which we normally hear during this season is “maaf zahir dan batin” which translates loosely to “I seek forgiveness (from you) physically and spiritually”.

Hari Raya Puasa or known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, with the start of a new month on the Islamic calendar, Syawal. It is a time of forgiveness within the Muslim community and a time for strengthening of bonds amongst relatives and friends. It is also a time to ask for forgiveness, reconcile and renew relationships with others.
