Happy Chap Goh Mei !
Today is the full-moon of the first lunar month which marks the end of the 15 days of Lunar New Year celebration. This day is known as Chap Goh Mei which is a Hokkien term that simply means ‘the 15th night of Chinese New Year’. Based on the literally meaning, it is the reason why the Chap Goh Mei is celebrated on the 15th day of Chinese New Year.
Just like Chinese New Year, Chap Goh Mei is celebrated with lots of fireworks and firecrackers to show the joy and festivity. In temples, thanksgivings are held and people would be praying for success and wealth for the coming year. The offerings and prayers are held on a grand scale on this particular night.
Chinese Valentine’s Day
On the legendary view, Chap Goh Mei is also being regarded as the Chinese Valentine’s Day. The young and single women will throw tangerines into the sea / lake as it is believed that they would find themselves a good husband when the tangerines are being picked up by someone. The unbelievable truth of this tradition is, it is originated from Penang, the little island in Malaysia.
